The WEG Committee have been campaigning on several road safety issues locally, to help make our streets safer to walk and cycle around.
Duncan Porter has been campaigning about pedestrian safety on Damsons Bridge, which is now being assessed in the South Gloucestershire funding round for 2021/2022.
Laura Fogg-Rogers initiated a campaign with Hambrook Primary School parents about Bristol Road speed limits. The campaign was successful, and South Gloucestershire Council plan to lower the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph – making the road, running next to a sports ground and primary school, much safer.
The campaign to reduce speeds around Winterbourne to 20mph is ongoing. If someone is hit by a car at 20mph they have a 30% greater chance of surviving than at 30mph. This would encourage more people to walk and cycle locally.
Routes for walking and cycling to school also need to be improved, with the Worrell’s Lane and Mill Road route (link to blog https://winterbourne-environmental.uk/blog/post/hambrook-school-road-safety) due to be assessed by South Gloucestershire in 2022/2023.
Let us know if there are any other routes in your area which need safety improvements!
